Edgar Allan Poe was orphaned before he was three, taken in but never fully claimed, and spent his short life shadowed by poverty, loss, and a grief he turned, again and again, into art. He gambled, drank, quarreled with nearly everyone who tried to help him, and buried one beloved after another, including the young wife whose long dying haunts his darkest pages. Out of that suffering he made a new kind of literature.

He more or less invented the detective story, gave the horror tale its modern shape, and pioneered science fiction, all while writing poems of hypnotic, mournful music. The Raven made him famous overnight and earned him almost nothing. The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado — these are not merely scary stories but precise descents into guilt, obsession, and the unraveling mind, written by a man who knew those territories from the inside.

He died at forty under circumstances still unexplained, found delirious on the streets of Baltimore, and was buried with little ceremony. Recognition, as so often, came after. We honor him as the haunted architect of the modern imagination — the writer who stared without flinching into fear, sorrow, and the strangeness of the human heart, and built from that darkness stories the world has never been able to put down.
