Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was an unremarkable student who nearly became a country parson before a chance invitation changed the history of science. At twenty-two he sailed aboard HMS Beagle on a five-year voyage around the world, and everywhere he looked — in the finches of the Galapagos, the fossils of Patagonia, the coral reefs of the Pacific — he saw the same astonishing puzzle: living things fitted exactly to their worlds, and varying, subtly, from place to place.

For more than twenty years afterward he gathered evidence, bred pigeons, dissected barnacles, and turned the puzzle over in his mind, knowing how it would shake the world. When he finally published On the Origin of Species, he offered a single, quiet, overwhelming idea: that all the endless forms of life had descended, over immense time, through natural selection from common ancestors. It remains the unifying principle of all biology.

He was a gentle, anxious, deeply honest man who followed the evidence wherever it led, even when it cost him peace. We honor him as the patient observer who taught us that we belong to the living world rather than standing above it — and that the truth, however unsettling, is worth a lifetime of careful looking.
